Bruny Island Forests a haven for wildlife,
and place of botanical historic significance where the first eucalypt samples were collected and catalogued
Things you can do to help!
One way is to begin bombarding the media and politicians with our story. Emails or letters that include the ad (see copy of ad from the Mercury Newspaper) and set out what our real concerns are is a way to begin this. Each of us could then get 10 friends to also send letters or emails to the media and politicians. By insisting on replies that actually address our concerns we may begin to break down the dismissive response we have been getting.
The text of the letter or email should be simple and straight forward. The letter should be a personal one and include your views on what is happening. Some points that could be made are listed below.
Bruny Island has historic, cultural and environmental values (check the ad for more detail)
Visitors from interstate and overseas, and from other parts of Tasmania, come to Bruny to experience the scenery, for birdwatching, view wildlife and soak up the Island's history and culture. (49800 Interstate and Overseas visitors came to Bruny in 2006-7)
Over 100 people are employed in providing services to these visitors.
Very little is spent on infrastructure for this industry or to promote or protect the Island's values and assets such as:
remains of whaling stations,
tracks in the National Park ,
Cook's landing sites
information and signage
Meanwhile, a State Government enterprise - Forestry Tasmania - has spent hundreds of thousand of dollars providing infrastructure to support a clear fell logging operation behind Adventure Bay. This will provide no new employment on Bruny Island.
This is Not simply an anti-forestry campaign - it could be suggested that different forms of forestry may have a role in the Island's future.
We are asking the Government to change its priorities and support jobs and a sustainable industry.
Concerned residents, shack owners and visitors are supporting this campaign.
Ask a question and demand an answer to it in your letter.
Ask them to meet with us and discuss these things.
